Chat with the Pros

We interviewed five renowned archers, a majority of which are known for their presence on the ASA and World Archery circuits, along with a retired NFL Safety who has hung up his Carolina Panthers jersey and replaced it with camo. Each bowhunter brings a unique perspective to the table, and while their experiences and opinions may differ, they all share one unifying thing: a commitment to using products that are THE BEST IN BOWHUNTING!

We asked them three questions:

  1. What T.R.U. Ball/Axcel products do you use during hunting season?
  2. What is the furthest shot you are comfortable taking on an animal?
  3. What is your most memorable hunt to date?
Here is what they had to say…

      Joel Maxfield- Wisconsin, USA

      1. I use the T.R.U. Ball Execution release and the Axcel Achieve sight with a 5-pin Accustat II scope. The Execution is crisp clean, accurate, and crazy dependable. While the Landslyde is the best hunting sight ever built, I have so much time behind the Achieve that it is like an extension of my arm!
      2. The longest shot I will take on a critter is 100+ yards, but it totally depends on the situation and how my equipment is performing. I may pass even at closer ranges if I am not 100% confident but may stretch it out if needed and have confidence in the kill.
      3. My most memorable hunts are mountain goats and sheep, because the areas they live in are spectacular! However, my favorite hunting is spot-n-stalk antelope. It tests all aspects of your hunting experience.

          Christopher Perkins- Ontario, Canada

          1. I am currently running the Antler Ridge Series 8” and 10” stabilizers, along with the Axcel Landslyde Sight and 3-pin Accustat II scope. I am also running my very own signature series T.R.U. Ball release, The Executive. I feel like T.R.U. Ball/Axcel makes some of the very best products for both hunting and target archery. They produce several products for both hunting and target archery, ensuring that a shooter of any caliber is a step above their competition. I have shot a T.R.U. Ball Release and Axcel Sight for over 10 years, and I can say I have never had a single failure. Just an example of why they truly are #1.
          2. There are a ton of variables when I comes to bowhunting; however, I feel extremely comfortable taking an ethical shot at 120 yards. In that situation I take extreme caution depending on the scenario and the body language of the animal.
          3. I would have to say my most memorable hunt is my mountain goat hunt back in 2020. Overall, the experience was amazing, from the mountains to the hunt itself, everything about it was something I will never forget.

              Chance Beaubouef- Tennessee, USA

              1. I use the Axcel Landslyde 5-pin and have my pins set up at 25, 40, 50, 60, and 70. I have found this works best for me all around.
              2. I get asked this question a lot, and it all just depends on the situation. I have killed a few animals past 100 yards, but it takes a perfect situation.
              3. My most memorable hunt would probably be an elk hunt in Montana. It is usually the hardest, most grueling hunts that will burn into your memory. Chasing elk for a month and finally getting it done with only a couple days left creates a lasting memory.

                  Levi Morgan- Pennsylvania, USA

                  1. I use the Tactical Landslyde because it is an absolute TANK. I am rough on stuff, and it never lets me down.
                  2. If conditions are perfect (wind, animal attitude), I will shoot as far as my sight/arrow clearance will allow me to shoot, which is normally around 110 yards.
                  3. My most memorable hunts are with my dad and son. An elk hunt with my dad where we doubled on bulls by ourselves in New Mexico and then watching my son kill his first deer with a bow.

                      Kris Schaff- Montana, USA

                      1. I use the T.R.U. Ball Blade release, the Axcel Antler Ridge 12” & 10” with an 8-degree quick disconnect, and the Axcel Landslyde with a 5-pin Accustat II scope. I use these products because when chasing animals through timber in Montana, I need something that is bulletproof and that I know will perform perfectly under any circumstance.
                      2. My farthest kill is 136 yards on an antelope. I have also shot an elk before at I believe it was 105 yards. I think I will continue to shoot this far if the situation is perfect. I will change my decisions depending on the behavior of the animal, wind/weather, etc. I am super comfortable out to as far as my setup allows each year, which Is typically around 115-130 yards.
                      3. My most memorable hunt would have to be my first deer with a bow, which was a spike mule deer. I was sitting in the blind with my brother Josh and shot him at 19 yards. However, my son is coming up at the age to finally be able to hunt here in two years, so I am sure my most memorable hunt will change very quickly!

                          Collin Jones- North Carolina, USA

                          1. I use the Axcel Landslyde with a 4-pin Accustat II scope and the Axcel Acclaim 12” stabilizers on the front and back with the TriLock Mount.
                          2. The farthest I will shoot is 80 yards for big game and 60 yards for deer.
                          3. 2021 in New Mexico. The first elk I ever killed. It was 2 pm on the last day of the hunt and everybody else was still in camp. We were sweating it out in a pop-up blind in 90-degree temps when a 335” bull ran into the watering hole. He wouldn’t give me a shot for several minutes, so I had to hold it together until he gave me a quartering away shot at 46 yards. I made a great shot, and he only ran for 60 yards.
